Cnidoscolus chayamansa Chaya, Cnidoscolus cyayamansa, is an interesting and unusual large shrub growing up to 20' in frost free climates, 10' for me here in zone 8b. It has a main stem to 4" in diameter with uniformly 1" side branches and large, up to 9" palmate, dark green leaves giving Chaya a very tropical look. The young leaves are edible if cooked like spinach. Chaya blooms a small white flower on short stems at the top of the shrub so are often not seen but the fragrance can't be missed since they smell like lemon blossoms and can perfume a large area. Hardy in at least zones 8-12, probably colder with root protection. Plant in any well-drained soil in sun or part shade, even as an understory to trees. Where not hardy can be grown in a pot, staying much shorter but should have a wide pot to accomodate the fleshy roots.
